Chemistry 351 - Lecture 2
Organic Fundamentals
-the term organic > derived from living things
-life force of living organisms > earth, wind, air, fire
-organic vs. inorganic; certain molecules and compounds were found naturally
-no real definitive definition for organic chemistry
-organic chemistry revolves around CARBON mainly
-only 1 in 625 atoms will be a carbon atom (1 in 2.07(48.5%) is oxygen)
-carbon has the ability to form bonds with itself
-carbon can also form multiple bonds within its self; single, double, triple bonds
->approx. 10,000,000 known compounds, 90% organic; 9 million compounds
Methods for teaching & learning O- Chemistry
Functional group research
-connects different reactions of similar systems
-convenient organisation
-promotes memorization
Mechanistic approach
-facilitates defining HOW and WHY things happen
-reduces the need to memorize
-promotes the recognition of similarities
-facilitates rationalizing new examples
-initially difficult for students

Document Summary

The term organic > derived from living things. Life force of living organisms > earth, wind, air, re. Organic vs. inorganic; certain molecules and compounds were found naturally. No real de nitive de nition for organic chemistry. Only 1 in 625 atoms will be a carbon atom (1 in 2. 07(48. 5%) is oxygen) Carbon has the ability to form bonds with itself. Carbon can also form multiple bonds within its self; single, double, triple bonds. 10,000,000 known compounds, 90% organic; 9 million compounds. Methods for teaching & learning o- chemistry: functional group research. Facilitates de ning how and why things happen. ^ nucelo le and electro le; we can predict how they come together. General chemistry to be able to tackle the mechanistic approach. Vsepr; pairs of electron try to get away from each other. > most of them will contain another atom. Formal charges; recognizing if something is neutral or positive/account. Key concepts you need to master in organic chemistry.
