CMMB 403 Lecture Notes - Lecture 12: Gonadal Ridge, Germ Cell, Mesonephros
Document Summary
Meiosis is initiated at very different times in males and females. In females, meiosis is initiated during the fetal period as stimulated by retinoic acid (ra) produced by the mesonephros. In males, meiosis does not start until puberty. The male fetal gonad is protected from ra by expressing an ra degrading enzyme (cyp26b1), therefore preventing the initiation of meiosis. Specification and migration of mammalian primordial germ cells. Before they start to differentiate, germ cells are formed at the posterior portion of the epiblast, and are known as pgcs. Germ cells (pgcs) form at the posterior portion of the epiblast and gastrulate through the posterior primitive streak, where they associate with the endoderm that will form the gut. A gfp transgene under control of the oct4 promoter can be used to follow germ cell migration. Prdm14 is a transcription factor that is a marker of pgcs.
