CMMB 421 Lecture Notes - Lecture 20: Penile Cancer, Viral Pathogenesis, Cancer Cell
Document Summary
Difference between tumour and cancer: tumour is an enlarged body mass, nothing more. Species: papillomaviruses are very species specific, they rarely jump species. Viruses that are species specific is a sign that that virus coevolved with their hosts. Papillomavirus has only 2-3 species that it jumped. Organ/tissue/cell type: skin, epithelial (or skin) cells. Types of lesions: warts, is a tumour (enlarged body mass) Number of lesions: many, certain localizations maybe. Carcinomas: cancers of epithelial cells, they are maligned. Cervical cancer, by ~90% is due to papillomavirus. Certain regions of the cervix are infected and affected. Papillomavirus has been found to cause penile cancer in horses. Cancer cell has a quiet mutations in its genome (biggest difference to all other cells). Other cells can be transformed, but didn"t acquire mutations that would imprint a change in their genome. Tumour could be many cells, always pathological. Hyperplasia: tumour referring to many cells, or big cells.
