Document Summary

In popular media people think bacteria are harmful, but in the past decade there has been a total shift because bacteria are now seen as total travellers (human superorganisms, an ecological community including the human). Bacteria are now seen as protecting you from disease. Microbiota: microbes themselves in the body (whole microorganisms) Microbiome: refers to genetic material of microbiota. Majority live in gut, around 99% weighing between 2-6 pounds. Ecological landscape: important in understanding why the body is able to harbour such a wide variety of microorganisms. Microbiome is thought to be unique between individuals like ngerprints. There are things that perturb the ecosystem which can result in them going into healthy or disease state. There is about 1 microbial cell for 1 human cell. A prokaryotic cell has about 1/100th to 1/1000th the volume of a eukaryotic cell, so expect at 200 lb person to carry 2lb of microbial cells.
