Marxism is, in essence, a critique of capitalism. It sees socio-economic class, and the struggles that arise between the classes, as the most important factor in understanding society: socio economic status or class discrimination are at the core of understanding structures in our society. Key concepts: the ruling class class that is dominant material force in society. Those with most money and assets/ economic power: dominant ideology ideology held by the ruling class. Set of beliefs and values set by ruling class and dominant ideology is their ideologies. They control the mainstream values and concepts within the society: hegemony ruling class exerts their power or leadership even in the presence of alternative beliefs. They do this by convincing, the oppressed class that their needs are being considered. Making oppressed people believe that the ruling class are taking care of them. They are trying to uplift their ideologies, to prevent any criticism and push back.
