People want to maximize rewards and minimize costs in relationships. Suggests that we conduct cost benefits analyses of our relationships. Suggests that we want to put in as little as possible and get back as much as possible. Cost is something we lose or are giving up (con) Benefit is something you get a reward (pro) Look at cost and benefit in the relationship as a whole (the equity your getting) We ask questions about what we think we deserve and what we think is actually available to us. Theorists say we do this without thinking sometimes. Subjective standards of what to expect in certain types of relationships. Could be based on past experiences, current experiences, real/fictional relationship. Asks how are relationship holds up to perceived or alternative to the relationship (is this the best i can do?) Wither a relationship is fair to the people in it over the course of time.
