A drill is something that will wear something else down, like time does to life: a drill can also be seen as something used for creation. It is sculpting: emphasizes change as well as construction. Michael field is something that has to remain in secret relates to the last in time line of the third stanza. Perhaps referring back to time or life because both precede this line. Think of the ways holiness has been conceived in the past.
