Mary in front of the mirror at the end of the story. Lots of aspects of naturalism in this story. Doctor starts to acknowledge that things are not fit/healthy for women. But at the same time it is almost a degradation of mary. The novel is saying that women are not able to live in the typical old victorian lives anymore. The doctor seems out of touch with current social realities: and he addresses mary as a girl, but she is 27 years old, she is a woman. This job puts him around women, especially venerable women. Doctor saying that alison had none of the usual feminine ambitions . Death scenes that have a bad moral effect. The novel has to include it because it shows what women are going through and shows that people actually die. Keeping women in a state of ignorance. Self-reflexive because women live in suffocation, and there is the drowning scene.
