He seems exceedingly positive considering that his situation is not the greatest (weather, living conditions, etc). The environment in the forest is revealed by duke senior that the environment is harsh and difficult to live in, however he appreciates this lifestyle much more than the court. Could also be seen as nostalgia for the natural beauty before industrialization. The conversation turns to one of his companions jaques (not to be confused with his son jaques), and his dislike for killing the animals in their own territory. It is revealed that jaques had seen a dying deer in the meadow and had lamented over the deer"s tears adding more needless water to the stream that it was lying on the edge of. This scene is set in the court of duke frederick.
