ENGL 393 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Edwin Abbott Abbott, Bildungsroman, Broad Church
Document Summary
Parallels the creatures devotion to tormenting victor. Conceives of his pursuit as a holy quest, consecrated by the ghosts of his friends. Victor almost passes his quest off to walton. On one hand, victor is trying to give walton advice, but here it seems as though victor is trying to (cid:272)o(cid:374)(cid:448)i(cid:374)(cid:272)e walto(cid:374) to take o(cid:374) vi(cid:272)to(cid:396)"s (cid:395)uest. Victor is at a point where he is almost dying in grace, but he still seems just as revengeful as he has the whole way through the text before now. After victor passes away, the narrative is passed to walton and we get to hear what the monster says. Frankenstein discovered that walton made notes on the conversations he and victor had, so victor (cid:373)ade edits a(cid:374)d (cid:374)otes o(cid:374)to walto(cid:374)"s (cid:396)e(cid:272)o(cid:396)di(cid:374)gs. Victor has possibly altered the account of the creature. We never get a clear purchase on the creature because victor has had the chance to alter him in the writing.
