Oter being able to sense what is in the ground beneath him is a metaphorical representaion of the capabiliies of humans. In these fantasy novels, there is a common idea/sense of a world that is doomed. Fantasy is exploring the reconiguraion of the moral and the ethical. Oter can"t make himself do evil work. Moral struggle when he learns his boats are being used for evil. Le guin uses fantasy to explore important aspects of our own world. The idea of transiion between an older world and a new world. Jameson: tolkien afords us the prototypical expression of this reacionary nostalgia for chrisianity and the medieval world, and le guin starts out, like so many others, as his disciple. Fantasy generates commentary on the poliics of imperialism. Le guin"s deployment of the paradigm of the struggle between good and evil becomes socialized and historicized by way of feminism. Le guin is trying to construct a vision of equality.
