On the surface this novel seems diferent from the other fantasy novels we have looked at. We have spoken about this book being very diferent from the other examples of fantasy that we have looked at in this course, and indeed it is. The crossing of the first threshold: playing checkers when shadow really seems to step into the other world. The road of trials: when he irst deals with the russian god and plays checkers and loses the bet. Sentenced to death but recovers by winning the next match. Freedom to live: when he is released from his debt of death to the god he played checkers with: laura says that shadow is not living. He has brought back a more vital and genuine form of human life. Our lives are diminished and lacking in something tha the reading of fantasy is supposed to re-expose us to.
