A person with contradictions and therefore a much more rounded character than we have seen previously: detectives are drawn with a much more complete back story, detectives have family relationships, often unsettled family relationships, troubled personal li(cid:448)es. The detective story becomes woven together with elements of personal and professional life. John rebus: a character with contradictions and strong elements of unusual psychological profile, he is an extension of a very strong characteristic of detective stories in the 90s, the detective is drawn in considerably more psychologically realistic fashion.
