GLGY 209 Lecture Notes - Lecture 18: Oceanic Crust, Structural Geology, Mid-Ocean Ridge

24 views4 pages

Document Summary

In structural geology, we cannot calculate the force, therefore we resort at a different concept (stress) Stress can be calculated because if we have a rock sample, we can study the effects of a certain force. In place: rock transported from one location to another. In position: rotation by a certain number of degrees. In nature, displacement is associated with rotation. Equal stress along the 3 dimensions of space = confining stress. In most parts of the earth"s crust, the stress is not distributed equally in 3d space, this is differential stress. There are crustal forces more powerful along some directions. In those points of the earth"s crust, there are changes in position, place, and shape. This stress can be associated largely with the 3 zones/settings in earth"s surface: Tension: mid oceanic ridge, where oceanic crust is generated and gradually expands in east and west. Shear: zones in which there is neither compression or tension.
