The roman army is the first professional army of the ancient world. A profession that people could choose to do, as opposed to seasonal war or conscription. In sparta, all adult citizens were involved in military somehow, it was not an option like it was in rome. People in the roman army got paid and all the benefits of a job and were given a place to live after they retired from the army. Military technology: camps and fortifications: all camps (temporary or permanent) would follow the same set-up: the playing card shape, camps had a protective outer wall. This meant they would have access to any supplies they needed: walls made of sun-dried brick, spartans were best at land battle so athens wanted to engage them in a navel battle.
