Pompeii and vesuvius: some people escaped but not many. Traffic was a problem in cities of any size: some roads had barricades to prevent through flow of traffic, attempts to regulate traffic, like we do today. Some of the streets had underground conduits for carrying away dirty water, and gutters were also present on streets and houses to collect rain water.
