The post-independence formal relationship with spain and portugal, was replaced with an informal type of governance. Not much changed social domination remained in place, creoles remained at the top of the social ladder. Lots of protectionist policies were put in place by new leaders so that their people/markets could succeed they tried to drive away british dominance. Places like the port of buenos aires and rio were really dynamic areas that were engaged in global trade and had lots of economic growth . Other, more rural areas, were not like this. There are three main interpretations: those that put emphasis on deeply-embedded characteristics of latin. Weaknesses in the monic structure of the new republics and shifts in the social structure. All of these interpretations see this as being a period of instability (post- independence). They see many characteristics that are contributing to the upheaval of new societies.
