58 views5 pages

Document Summary

Takes place in the follicular cells and the corpus luteum. Lh stimulates theca cells to synthesize androgens. Fsh then stimulates granulosa cells to convert androgens to estrogen. 1-2 mature each month starting at puberty and ending at menopause. Identical steps of chromosome replication and division (meiosis) during gamete production in both sexes. Each primary oocyte yields only one ovum and three polar bodies that disintegrate. Each primary oocyte is surrounded by a single layer of granulosa cells. When combined they are a primary follicle. In each cycle several primordial follicles start to develop but only one becomes the primary follicle. The follicle matures is the ovary, after which it is the secondary follicle. At ovulation the follicle pushes out of the ovary wall. Cilia and smooth muscle help move the ovum towards the uterus. Has a basal layer that is constantly dividing and a functional layer which is shed every month. Dilates to 10 cm and effaces in labour.
