Document Summary
Hematology readings: huether & mccance (2017) chapter 20 (review), 21. Barry et al. (2014) chapter 32 (assessment) and chapter 33 (p. 786-819, 833-837) Erythropoiesis: the process of red blood cell production. Fibrinolysis: the means of maintaining blood in its fluid form, a continual process that results in the dissolution of fibrin. Hemoglobin: a complex, protein-iron compound composed of heme (an iron compound) and globin (a simple protein) that binds with oxygen and carbon dioxide. Pancytopenia: marked decrease in the number of red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. Phagocytosis: a process by which white blood cells ingest or engulf an unwanted organism and subsequently digest it. Polycythemia: an abnormal condition characterized by excessive levels of red blood cells. Bone marrow: blood cell production (hematopoiesis) occurs within the bone marrow.
