Chapter 65 nursing management: musculoskeletal trauma and orthopedic surgery. Most common cause of musculoskeletal problems is injury from traumatic event resulting in fracture, dislocation and associated soft tissue. Two most common types of injury affecting musculoskeletal system often associated with abnormal stretching/twisting during vigorous activities and tend to occur around joints and in the spinal. Impingement syndrome entrapment of soft tissue structures under coracoacromial arch of shoulder. Rotator cuff tear tear within muscle or tendinoligamentous structures around shoulder. Shin splints inflammation along anterior aspect of calf from periostitis caused by improper shoes, overuse, or running on hard pavement. Tendinitis inflammation of tendon as a result of overuse or incorrect use. Ligament injury tearing/stretching of ligament; usually as a result of inversion, eversion, shearing, or torque applied to a joint. Meniscal injury injury to fibrocartilage of the knee characterized by popping, clicking, tearing sensation, effusion and swelling. Treatment nsaids; rest until symptoms decrease, gradual return to regular activity.
