NURS 498 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Avascular Necrosis, Hemarthrosis, Bone
Document Summary
Dislocation a severe injury of the ligamentous structures surrounding the joint. Results in complete displacement or separation of the articular surfaces of the joint. Usually result from overwhelming forces transmitted to joint causing disruption of soft tissue support surrounding joint. More frequently included in upper extremities i. e. thumb, elbow, shoulder. More frequently included in lower extremity hip (often with car accidents), patella (instability of tendons, ligaments, muscles surrounding knee or a sharp blow to kneecap) Radiograph performed to determine extent of displacement, may also be aspirated to determine presence of hemarthrosis or fat cells. Nursing and collaborative management: the longer the joint remains unreduced greater possibility of avn (bone cell death as a result of inadequate blood supply, hip joint is especially susceptible to avn, neurovascular assessment is critical. First goal realign dislocated portion of the joint; can be accomplished by a closed reduction which may be performed under local/general anaesthesia or iv conscious sedation.
