NURS 585 Lecture 2: Week 2 Required Readings
Document Summary
Exploring how new registered nurses construct professional identity in hospital settings. The journal of continuing education in nursing, 39(6), 255- 262. There is a shortage of nurses (more retiring, less going into profession) Finding a niche: a place where individuals values and skills fit with the people whom they work with. Orientation: some felt they had adequate orientation and others did not. Relationships that the nurses had with their preceptor was a big factor. Payback experiences where new graduates did the same thing to new students when they became preceptors. Conflict of caring: nurses are finding it harder to care for patients due to time constraints and fear of crossing the line . Taking licensing exam: most difficult for new grads because of high levels of anxiety and fear of failure. Key point: there is a need for a balance between challenge and support in the practice environment. Organizations need to suppor nursing empowerment and voice.
