PHIL 329 Lecture 2: Lecture 2 Week 1
Document Summary
Moral evaluation of an act (wrong/right) is determined by good and bad consequences of that act. Ends justify the means (means refers to the actions taken)- so if an action yields good consequences, then that justifies the rightness of the act. Intrinsic goodness - good in itself - good independent of its relation to other things. Instrumental goodness - good not in itself but in virtue of bringing about something that is good in itself. Pleasure/happiness the only thing that is good in itself (intrinsically good) Good only insofar as they tend to bring about pleasure/happiness. Pursuit of excellence - isn"t good or bad in itself (morally neutral), it only becomes good or bad when it produces happiness or unhappiness in an individual. Pain/unhappiness the one thing that is intrinsically bad. Net happiness of an act = [all the happiness that would result from the act] - [all the unhappiness that would result from that act (i) (ii) (iii)
