Document Summary

Karma is understood as a physical substance in janism. Dampness of the jiva that saturates the jiva a saturated cloth, an advanced person dries out the jiva- as in eliminating the ignorance and desires. Dry washed cloth is put in the dirty water makes it dirty. Dirty cloth put into the water, it"s already full of dirt. A wet cloth picks up a lot of dirt and is difficult to clean. Drying out the wet clothe is the elimination of the passions/desires and the cultivation of knowledge. You do the same action but don"t get as much dirt/karma. It"s hard to eliminate karma in the second case. Clothes wetness is a metaphor for impassions, desires and the ignorance of the individual person. We don"t want any of those which accumulate karma: clothing brings less karma, it picks us less karma when it"s dry (ignorance and desires).
