Every ritual has audience: in karnataka, high ranking non brahmins own the land, 4 castes, coorg, panika, medav, poleyas. There is the brahmin priest in the temple and there is an oracle (people having direct contact with gods and deities). Coorg men are in charge, they pay. Then a panika (low caste but caste hindus so touchable) cut the chicken first cooks it and offers it to the image, when the image is first created. Then the possessed person comes and touches the fire with bare feet and then the idol with his feet. The bamboo idol made by panika is on the coorg"s head. The idol is created in the village square. Animal sacrifice: blood (considered impure) on the courtyard not the shrine. The coorg is supposed to be sacrificed. The poleyas mirror the ritual, do the same thing but for their own deities. Then the brahmin oversees, asks the god to leave.
