SAST 303 Lecture 8: Discussion 3
Document Summary
The background to partition was that the primarily muslim dominated areas would go to. Pakistan, the predominantly hindu areas would go to india. Under british india, what is now pakistan predominantly had muslim people. There were a lot of princely kingdoms. Princes (rajas) were subordinate to the empress (queen elizabeth) Kashmir was one of the princely states, it was not an area that was directly controlled by the british crown. As with all the princely states, when british rule was coming to an end, they asked the princely states about all this because otherwise india would revert to original pattern of little kingdoms fighting each other. Majority of the people in kashmir are muslims, the law says it was the prince"s right to choose to be part of pakistan or india. There was a lot of tension between muslims and hindus.
