Parsons and nature of sociological theory: parsons: autonomous expert practice. Came from concern that sociology was not substantive, therefore not useful. Have sociological theory that is based on themes/problems/language of argumentation from public world. Goal = uncover underlying principles of social order and social change: reading previously excluded sociological theorists. excluded -> canons do not form without exclusions and silences. New method of reading: refocus attention on: Darker side of modernity: were previously all male, white advocates of european culture. Single view of how things are/ought to be. Post wwii way of looking at "first world" and "third world" Existence of alienation, devaluation and un fulfillment of workers. Mechanic to organic solidarity, social justice + equal opportunity. Sociological theory has not fulfilled 19th century promise that social knowledge can contribute to the betterment of society: development of american social canon = political/moral character of sociological theory was lost.
