All sociologists would agree that society is not a monolithic arrangement- it has parts. Society is a complex structure made up of parts that either work together or are in conflict, based on which perspective you subscribe to. The conflict approaches in sociology see society as comprising inequality and conflict among its elements. Society is not only broken into many parts, but these parts are inherently unequal. Some groups or entities have more social value than others. Social value can be determined by power, wealth, etc. Social stratification can stem from a two person group all the way up to. Social position in a stratified society can be acquired at birth, but social position can also be achieved over the course of a lifetime. Ascription v achievement: both are at work in social stratification. Ascription describes a social role that one is born with. Achievement describes a social role that one acquires.
