In 1534, a voyage made by jacques cartier sailed to the gulf of st. lawrence. In 1535, cartier made more extensive voyages inland in the same area as his first voyage. In 1541 through to 1543, colonization of newfoundland was attempted, but it ultimately failed, and the french pulled out of the area until the 17th century. The concept of race was created to explain human differences and to provide an excuse for the inexcusable. Social darwinism- a social doctrine employed in the late 19th and early 20th century that was based off of darwin"s theory of natural selection. Only those who are strong enough will survive and thrive in society. Eugenics- weeding out inferior characteristics or promoting certain stronger characteristics. Scientific racism- racism that is supported by science.
