Self is developed through social structures, but not entirely. If foucault"s "end of individual" happens, society should analuze it, not accept it. Mutual interpretative interplay between social science and those whose activities compose its subject matter. Reflection on social processes, become entangled with the universe that they analyze. Problem: telling water that it"s water has no impact on it. Ontological security: autonomy of bodily control within predictable routines. Modernity = no traditional societies anymore, world is changing. All too optimistic about modernity, don"t anticipate dark side. Goal: develop analysis of double-edged character of modernity. Time-space distantiation- binding together of ever larger time/space. Tied into abstract systems: flight network, money systems. People have to trust abstract systems rather than people. Dread associated with repression of risks vs. nothing an individual can do. Modernity is a monster that can be tamed - what you can create, you can "uncreate"
