Donahugh- invited Jerry Rubin to be on his show- older than most of the counterculture protests
in the 1960s. Ruben invested in apple in the 1980s, started arguing that the best way to beat the
system was to put on a suit and a tie and work with the system, embodied the ‘yuppie’ cohort.
1960s counterculture was motivated by opposition to the Vietnam war- need to redirect power to
the people.
The Chicago Eight- eight protest leaders including Jerry Rubin and Black Panther leader Bobby
Seale, Seale showed up to the trial wearing a judge’s robes and underneath a police officer’s
uniform.
Political Economy of Aging- how was the system created and who does it benefit? Leads to
structure dependency- do older adults need to be dependent at all, or is it structural factors that
lead to this dependency. Very macro level- does not address interactions at the individual level.
Critical Gerontology- motivated by a critical approach and takes a more applied approach. One
should question essentialism- aging must be a certain way. There are alternative frameworks for
understanding aging. There must be a focus on empowerment. The focus is on challenging
assumptions and empowering the marginalized, comes out as allowing older adults their own
voice. To work together in praxis. Hybrid of research and social action.
Feminist Perspective- gender is an organizing principle for studying social life across the life
course. Gender structures experience throughout the life course, leading in late life to inequality
for women. Lifelong inequalities combine with disproportionate strains and demands to burden
women in late life.
METHODS IN THE SOCIOLOGY OF AGING
Theory should drive your choice of methods. Use theory to identify and appropriate research
question.
Ideographic approach- examines a limited number of cases, but does so in great detail.
Ex ennography
Nomothetic Approach- seeks to cover a broad range of cases, but focuses on only a few of the
most important factors. Ex. surveying
Main issues are reliability and validity
Experimental Research- involves randomly assigning groups to different conditions- the gold
standard for establishing causation. Must eliminate all other factors than the experimental
condition. Just because you induce some condition, does not mean that it reflects a real world
condition (ecological validity).
RCT-random control trials.
Survey Research- representative sample, reflective of the larger population of older adults.
