If, as anthropologists often claim, marriage is a cultural universal, what does it do for people in marriages and unmarried people around those who are married? (functions of marriage) A universal ? (helps solve problems in all cultures i. g sexual access between adults, puts rules on this. Love is not a cross-cultural attribute to marriage. Hedican notes that marriage normalizes the roles of adults. 2)polygamy marriage between more than 1 spouses, more than 1 marriage. Serial monogamy- married, then divorced, then re-married poly=many gamy=marriage. 2a) polygyny- one man marries more than 1 woman/ wife poly=many gyny= women. 2b)polyandry-one woman marries more than one man (very rare) poly=many andry= men. Demographics -> economics -> big families in advantages. Labour that comes with the wives, the children help. Tibat-> land is help by men, limited amount of land, scarce resource in family. Female infanticide killing of girls shortly after birth. Women are having more children than theyre prepared for.
