Ability/scale at which you consume depends on how much you can give up. Exchange theory: reciprocity gift economies, redistribution, market exchanges commodity economies. You get less back than you gave up. Foraging, horticulture, pastoral societies (agriculture and industrial societies too) Mutual exchange of goods, gifts or services between 2 or more people. A sense that the exchange is roughly equal in value. Little conscious attention paid to value of goods, services. Family, close friends usually between people who expect to see each other again. 1 family/village/individual collect together a large amount of stuff wealth items. Future return on the gift, economic and social industries (?) Potlatch gift giving feast: components, host family, guests, feast, signing, dancing, stories, life changing events.
