Ancient japan - the end of the edo period. Diverse groups of people came into power throughout the history of japan. When the yayoi people came to the japanese islands in a large scale migration, pottery designs were mixed during the joman period and this also introduced other practices like wet-rice farming. The yayoi people brought rice cultivation to the joman people. The development of the yamato state (300-646 ad) Large burial mounds for emperors are associated with the development of the yamato. This indicates to anthropologists that during this period there was a social hierarchy and political system in place. The yamato state was an ancestral state. Classical and aristocratic bureaucracy: the yamato court (646-1185) The main actors of this time period were the imperial family and aristocratic families. The centre of the archaic japanese polity, situated in yamato.
