Document Summary

There are two major characteristics of the stem family: consists of generations of married couples (still permanent members even after death) One child remains in the stem family as the successor. The eldest son most commonly remains in the family, this is preferred but not universal. A younger son may remain in the family when the elder son isn"t trustworthy to pass the family on to. Sometimes a daughters husband is chosen when no real sons are present, this is called an adopted son . Responsibilities and expectations are quite different for those who carry on the family and those who are married off. A daughter may remain in the family if the eldest son doesn"t want to take the position and she is the only other sibling. Daughters are often married out as brides and become part of their spouses stem family. Children and adults may leave and join other families as adoptees.
