Some say that the japanese employment system dates back to the edo period with samurai warriors being similar to salaried workers but this is not correct. In all actuality meiji is the true origin of the japanese employment system. Although skilled artisans of this period did not work for the same company for long periods of time headhunting was common. Going from place to place was positive because it allowed them to learn and grow, however this type of living cost a lot so employers began to make lifetime employment more desirable. Overall though the japanese employment system should be considered a new cultural ideal in postwar japan.
