Appearance is different from majority of japanese people, their skin colour is slightly different. The language the ainu used was previously different until the assimilation policy. Some ainu people married japanese people and this raises their status. Were forced into northern areas of japan like hokkaido. Had a negative impact on health and social life because they could no longer hunt. Fertile land given to settlers so they got the infertile land. The status of the kyu djin (former aborigines) Lost culture because assimilation state condemned it. 1937 the ainu kyokai modified legal restrictions. Korean identity, resident of japan but not considered a citizen. They are only in japan because their families were taken there during times of japanese imperialism and colonialism. These people do not identify as japanese. Prewar japan: annexed in 1910, 1920s japanese nationals and voluntary migration.
