The word renaissance" (rinascimento in italian) means rebirth , Era is best known for the renewed interest in the culture of classical antiquity after the period that renaissance humanists labeled the dark ages. These changes, while significant, were concentrated in the elite, and for the vast majority of the population life was little changed from the middle ages. One role of petrarch is as the founder of a new method of scholarship, renaissance. It provoked fresh insight into the nature of reality, questioning beyond god and spirituality, and provided for knowledge about history beyond christian history. Classical sculptures and architecture were especially studied and used as models by italian. Ancient philosophy raised new questions about the nature of man and god. Ancient literature explored cultural ideas of what it is to be human and what it is to be a social creature. Established polykleito"s canon of proportions, setting ideal correlations among body parts.
