Ecology: the group"s means of subsistence, the environment that supports it, the tools and other artifacts used in particular environments. Social organization: how the group structures itself- formally and informally- in order to do work, form fractions to maintain and resolve conflicts, and exchange goods and information. Developmental cycle: how the group transmits to novices the skills, values, and knowledge that constitute a sensible, competent person. Cosmology: the group"s system of knowledge, skills and beliefs. In controversies, no one agreed on what competence consists of. Scientists disagree not just about results, but about the quality of each other"s work as well: we will see examples of this during this semester. Collins and pinch bring up citizens, democratic society, and science and technology.
