Study run by the public health service to observe and record the natural progression of syphilis (the tuskegee study of untreated syphilis in the negro male ) No information given to participants: told they were treated for bad blood . The men received free medical care, food and burial insurance for participating. The study continued after penicillin was discovered to be an effective remedy for syphilis in the 1940s. Therefore there was no longer any benefit to society or the infected men to continue in the trials. There was no way for a subject to end the experiment. There was no ethical guidance from an external committee. The experiment was not useful and not descriptive of society. Highly unethical, and ended up receiving a presidential apology. (journals of abnormal and social psychology, 1963) Test the limits people will go to to follow orders. Got people to electroshock fake students for getting the answers wrong.
