BIOL 1080 Lecture Notes - Lecture 11: Lockean Proviso
Document Summary
2nd argument: self-ownership argument: treating people as equals means treating them as ends in themselves, if people are ends in themselves, then they may not be used without their consent. Basic idea - if you(cid:1685)re entitled to some of the fruits of my talents, i don(cid:1685)t really own myself. Owning ourselves is the way to treat us and each other as equals - you cannot take from them that which is theirs. Premise 4 - rawls says, we do not own our talents and abilities, we are just luck that we were born with the ones given to us. Maybe you own them, but because it(cid:1685)s by accident/luck then you don(cid:1685)t really own the fruits/products of them. Free riders - using more land to make a bigger profit. The test, then for legitimate appropriation is that it does not worsen (i. e. materially) anyone"s overall condition. Those are only one way of making someone worse or better off.
