BIOL 1080 Lecture Notes - Lecture 9: Body Dysmorphic Disorder, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Obsessive–Compulsive Disorder
Document Summary
Neurotoxins/substance abuse: focuses on addictive endpoints through neuron activity. Previous treatments of mental illness: trepanation, shunning, punishment, asylums, exorcisms. New treatments: drug therapy, talk therapy, irradiation (shock), surgeries (tissue implants), jail. Pet scans are used to light up the brain in areas of high activity during different functions (speaking, hearing, seeing). What the pet scan is measuring is uncertain, but activity may be due to blood flow, astrocyte cloud energy use, and neuron firing or a combination of these. Zones of the cortex: frontal, parietal, occipital, and temporal. Zones are placed closely together for fast response. The size of the zone is proportional to the number of peripheral nerves there. Information flow crosses the longitudinal fissure, large criss-cross of neurons across the brain. Proposed that personality is an emergent property of the brain and the ccn. Had a large iron rod fired through his skull and destroyed much of the left frontal lobe.
