BIOL 1090 Lecture Notes - Lecture 24: Polysaccharide, Pasteurization, Laminin
Document Summary
Extends outward from surface of plasma membrane. Contains variety of secreted materials that influence cellular behaviour. Example: skin: dermis // basement membrane // epidermis. Organized network of material produced & secreted by cells. In contact with many cells of multicellular organisms! Assembly of carbohydrate groups attached to proteins & lipids on the outside of the plasma membrane. Just harder, less flexible, and less motile than other ecm forms: provides mechanical protection, serves as barrier to some particles, binds regulatory factors, proteins / glycoproteins, proteoglycans, made of cellulose, hemicellulose, pectin, assorted proteins. Spaces between primary cell walls of adjacent cells. Provides structural support to cell and organism (as a whole too!) Protects cell from mechanical damage / pathogen attack. Analogous to gap junctions in animal cells! Found mainly from unpasteurized dairy / raw food (expecially if it"s been left in fridge for long time) Allows bacterium to use actin polymerization machinery! Actin propels the bacteria, making them very motile!! (rocketing motility)
