Document Summary

Global warming: progressive increase of earth"s average temperature. Caused by recent increases in concentrations of particular gases in the atmosphere (including water vapour, co2, methane [ch4] and ozone [o3]) Greenhouse effect: warmth from the sun heats earth"s surface which then radiates heat energy outward. Most of this heat is radiated back into space but some of the heat warms up the greenhouse gases in the atmosphere and then is reradiated to earth"s surface. Gases act like a blanket, retaining more heat thus reradiating more heat = temperature underneath the atmosphere is warmer. In itself, this is not dangerous - just todays" levels of carbon dioxide are causing excess warming. Bodies of water absorb energy and help maintain stable temperatures on earth. Heat: total amount of energy associated with the movement of atoms and molecules in a substance. Atoms that make up complex molecules of living organisms move through the environment via biogeochemical cycles.
