BIOL 2060 Lecture Notes - Lecture 10: Arceuthobium, Parasitoid, Herbivore
Document Summary
One species beneits at the expense of another: (+, -) or (-, +) (1) parasiism (2) herbivory (3) predaion. Types of exploitaive interacions (a) categories of heterotrophic organisms: Omnivore consumes producers and consumers (b) funcional classiicaions of predator: Consumers (1o) of plants; grazer vs. browser: grainivores. Cannibalism: consumers that prey on the same species. Intraguild predaion: consumers that compete/prey on each other: parasitoids. Parasites that use/kill host to rear young: parasites. Parasiism is a non-mutual relaionship between species, where the parasite (+), beneits at the expense of the host (-) Parasites are usually smaller than hosts, which they live in/on for an extended period, and do not kill them. Parasites show a high degree of specializaion, and reproduce at a faster rate than their hosts. Ectoparasites are those that live on the host"s skin within the protecive cover of feathers and hair. Endoparasites live within the host (e. g. beneath the skin, bloodstream, gills of ish, mouthparts)
