In the early years of the conservation movement (1970s), efforts were aimed mainly at the salvation of individual species—that is, saving them from extinction. Today, conservation biology is aimed more at the biodiversity of the entire community and the ecosystem. Explain in detail why there has been this shift in focus. Give a specific example.

Explain the basic principles of "ecosystem management." How does this approach differ from multiple use management?

Describe two different ecosystems and explain the importance of species diversity to the overall survival of the ecosystem. Discuss conservation efforts for each ecosystem.
