Document Summary

Lecture 5a estuaries 1 estuaries mark transition from freshwater to saltwater. Must have a river inflow end and an ocean inflow end. Estuaries are subject to tides due to their ocean inflow end deltas form when sedimentation of a river exceeds the erosive capacity of the ocean\ estuaries have high sedimentation, inputs of fresh and saltwater, and tidal mixing. Conditions in water and sediments change one or two times daily due to tides there are four types of estuary formations. Drowned river valley: v-shaped, very shallow, 100 to 1 width to depth, many mud flats, strong freshwater inflow. Fjord: u-shaped glacially sourced drowned valleys, depth often with a sill at the ocean end that limits water exchange with the ocean (sometimes anoxic), weak freshwater input. Sometimes strong freshwater inputs in rainy seasons, weaker in dry seasons (greater saltwater inputs) Bottoms typically consist of clays, sands, and muds.
