System software helps run the computer and coordinates instructions between application software and the computer"s hardware devices. Application software is used to do tasks at home, school and work. Categories are productivity software, educational software, drawing software, web authoring software, business software and other categories. Programs that enable you to perform various tasks required in home, school and business including word processing, spreadsheet, presentation, database and personal information manager (pim) programs. Early application that turned computer into a necessity. Labels are descriptive text that identifies the components of the worksheet. Allows you to easily do calculations and numerical analyses. Basic element is worksheet: columns and rows form boxes called cells. Values are numeric data either entered in directly or as a result of a calculation. Functions are formulas that are preprogrammed into the spreadsheet into the spread sheet software. Benefit is ability to recalculate functions and formulas. Example: microsoft excel and open office calc.
