Smtp, simple mail transfer protocol - only for sending emails. Messages must be in 7-bit asci (cannot be in binary - most attachments are in binary, but will be encoded to base 64 via the email client) Http - pull, the client requests something and the server gives. Smtp - push, the client pushes a message to the mail server. Http - each object is encapsulated in its own response message. Smtp - multiple objects sent in multipart message. More features including manipulation of stored messages on the server, using port 143 (non-encrypted port) by default or port 993(using pop3 securely) Issue with pop - everything (including password) is passed to the server in plaintext. We need to map computer ip address and names and vice versa. General service: looking up ip address using a human readable name (and vice versa)
