Document Summary

Classics lec #6: archaic greece, 800-480 bc- economy, society, politics (ch 8-9) Basileis in 7th cent bc lost their power to oligarchies which means rule of the few . Rich men called themselves agathoi good people and the poor people kakoi bad people . Agathoi had relatively little power over kakoi due to wealth, war, and ideology. Greek farmers (those with enough land and workers) would exchange the surplus for goods they wanted. Many people sent their surplus value overseas opening up jobs for those who could handle the danger of working on the high seas. Archaic aristocrat kleinas (and many more) could afford to pay to build the ship, pay his men usually 180-200 men for a campaign of 3-6 months which would cost between 5-8 silver talents in athenian money. No great mansions or tombs in archaic greece. Small gap between rich and poor in ancient greece made greek aristocrats much weaker than those in developed societies.
